
The 2002 AARP study revealed that ¾ of Americans over 50 take regularly medications and the majority take on average four medications. It was not rare to record nine medications taken by one person. Polypharmacy is a serious, overlooked problem which may contribute to the epidemic of chronic diseases.

Most of the medications are prescribed independently by different specialists without consulting each other. The electronic data keeping does not really resolve this problem. A poll conducted by the American Osteopathic Association in 2019 revealed that 86% of Americans take vitamins or supplements.
